Thanks for your comments Sasha, always good to know the extent of a problem.

I was thinking of just reverting this part of the site to HTML4 and
using the ubiquitous object/embed combo, I came across this archived mail:

Which suggests the same/similar thing happens with embed. The bugzilla
link given by the person that replied is irrelevant, different bug IMO.

But I can't believe no one so few other people came across this bug in
Gecko, it seems too widespread.

Which leaves me with the options of just ignoring the fact that it won't
work in a small percentage of browsers, sticking with fixed size
grahics, or coming up with a whole mess of javascript to get around the
problems. [Sigh]
