[thelist] Standards advice

As a further question to my previous ramblings about <html> standards,

if one only specifies

<html>
<head></head>
<body></body>
</html>

as a page template, what HTML standard/version is the browser
botched into using??

is it HTML2??

BTW Cheers for all of the great sources on this topic, its fascinating to
see the different cultural attitudes to whether we should use standards
or not
