When you are job hunting, and you are leave a phone message, keep your
message short and to the point. AND be sure to leave your phone number.
It is also helpful to leave a message (with your phone number) when
sending an e-mail.  Don't assume that your email will jump out or even
be delivered. This applies whether contacting a potential hiring
manager, the hr department, or a recruiter.
