It doesn't work for me either (WinXP, IE 6).

OTOH The only reason I can think of is: Active Directory uses DNS for name
resolution. The machine is (for some reason) appending the primary DNS
suffix to the unqualified address (see your Network settings - advanced
properties - DNS), and asking the AD DNS server to resolve the IP address
from an address like: 1234567.mydomain.com

Or maybe there some MS "Security patch" that disabled the resolution of
decimal representations of IP addresses (but I don't ever remember reading
about one).
