unless you need to have backward compatibility, in which case they're pretty
much required.

fwiw, whether or not they're necessary in cfmx, i'm going to continue to use
locks around shared scopes just in case a technote comes out in the future
that says that all the current thinking about locking in cfmx is rubbish.
;p  much better to be safe than sorry i think.
