You've got it spot-on Mark. I think that the fundamental problem for anyone designing a web site, whether they're a designer or developer, is that to do so you have to sit so close to the project you lose your clarity of vision. It is ten times easier to be objective about someone else's site than your own. That's why I always respect the feedback of colleagues and friends, whether expert or not.
