Incidentally this is effectively the exact same effect that Microsoft
developed with the MSDN library and MSIE remote scripting a couple years
back. They have something like 500,000 nodes in a tree for you to navigate,
but using remote scripting it incrementally loads only the section you click
on, plus the top-level of all sub-sections.
