red hat is nice, but if you are a complete linux newbie, you might
want to try out knoppix, its a linux distribution that boots from CD,
no commitment, no installation

RedHat 8's default GUI is very pretty, but it has a pretty big
memory footprint, so on an old computer it might run too slow for
comfort
