Getting the OS installed and everything set up and working will be
enough
of a task ... don't overload him, man! :)

LOL - agreed!
Walk before you run! ;)

Hugh -
If you've got a nice fast net connection - it's worth going to
distrowatch anyway and grabbing a few of the top rated ISOs - fd images
are included with most of them and diskwrite port for dos is included
with most.

Big thing ... Really big thing - make sure you've got a NIC which is as
standard as possible available. Go with a standard 3com or intel
adaptor. If it's not quite as standard as that - yank the card and get
the model number of the interface chip.

I.e. if you've got a Dlink 530TX card - the onboard chip will be either
defined as via-rhine/ via-rhineII or tulip! (depending on the revision
number and flavour you're using)

Debian isn't a bad option for a build, and their standard build has all
the tools you need for a standard web config available - but try as I
might - I could not compile in support for the dlink card! Bombed every
time compiling in NIC support to the kernel!

Let us know how it goes.
If you're in the UK - can provide you a disk with Mandrake 9 if
necessary
