Well, it's supposed to be possible but I've heard of plenty of horror
stories when it's attempted.

This doesn't directly address the "how to" but rather the "safely". I
recommend installing GoBack software first, which lets you revert your
entire HD to a previous point in time. It's a good safety measure for
this type of experimentation or just for recovering deleted or
over-written files. It's saved my bacon /many/ times -- well worth the
$40 it costs. I think there's even a free trial download available
from www.roxio.com/goback.
