yes, it's fixed at 550px.

seen em all.  none of them deal with the rounded corner box having a non-css
border around the outside.

i haven't, but i guess i could do that.

believe me.  that's where i started from.  it works perfectly if the window
is wide enough to accomodate the fixed width content contained within the
bordered box.
