This is a little off (this) topic, but you may be interested in not using phpMyAdmin at all and instead using MySQL Control Center (desktop based GUI) available freely from the MySQL website.

I have a very slow machine running MySQL and phpMyAdmin would sometimes take 3-4 minutes to load a query. With MySQL Control Center it is almost instant.
