What I would do is find an instance (or create one) of whatever extended 
string I wanted to replace, with special characters embedded, then Alt-C 
(copy) and Alt-V (paste) it into the extended search and replace.  those 
'special characters' appear as non-printable characters.  I do not know 
of a a programatic way to generate a tab inside the search-replace 
window and I never got it to work when I tried either, so I would just 
go copy a tab and paste it into the window.
