CSS would be much easier to maintain, but hey... I've given up.
I've decided to change the 'desc' class to 'float: left; text-align: right;
width: auto;'.

This actually does the trick in Internet Explorer 6 quite nicely. In Opera
7 it doesn't fill the row but that's fine. The page is for my personal use
anyway.
