I'm not sure as to how complex you want to get. Jabber (www.jabber.org) offers an open source solution to run your own chat server, and has 3rd party apps that can fit within a given web page. You also have the ability to do an IM function as well. So, basically, you can more or less create a yahoo type of group chat, combined with the 1-1 IM function.... You also have a couple of newsgroups that you can turn to for assistance if needed.
