[thelist] forcing <td> height - is a spacer.gif the only way?

Yes, I know; it's been discussed to death; thing is, I can't find the
answer. I've tried setting the <tr> and the <td> height to 100% (yes, I
know there's really no 'height' attribute), tried it in my CSS; tried
burning a cat's liver by the dark of the moon. Naught helps.
 
What *didn't* I try?
