Hrm.  That suggests it is converting it somewhat though.  Is it possible
that what you're printing out is being converted to VARCHAR for print
purposes?  I would try monkeying with it more, but I can't help beyond
standard Oracle stuff sorry.

What are you doing with this date once you get it converted?
