[thelist] Advice on Redirect

I was told to remove some products from our website and redirected the html
files to avoid error messages. However, I deleted all the pdfs and the
jpgs/gifs. The last error log (from the site that checks our links) was huge
(hundreds of pages) and mostly related to the removal of the pictures and
pdfs.
How do I avoid these error logs from occurring without taking a chance that
someone will accidentally hit those urls?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
