XML is just a syntax/format, establishing rules for xml-compliant 
languages to adhere to.

XHTML is a re-formulation of HTML that adheres to XML rules.
MathML is another language that adheres to the same rules.
Same for SGML
Same for hundreds (thousands?) of other languages
