Thanks for your help so far. I've located the problem, which is that 
BSD-FTPd has a default umask of 027, despite the system umask being 022. 
I've found the command to reset the default umask for the ftpd:
"ftpd -u 022"
...but I can'f find the path to the ftpd. Can you help at all?

I probably also need to alter a config file somewhere?
