Anyway, this exact same thing happened yesterday to my boyfriend on his 
Windows XP computer. I remembered some recent posts to this list for 
something called lavasoft and he went out and got it, installed it and 
ran it and it helped. Turned out he had something like 39 viruses, 
ad-wares, spy-wares and whatever else is out there. (That's probably 
not the right terminology for this junk, but I'm a mac user so how 
would I know?)

Problem was solved.
