Andy, IMHO Drupal is great (and getting better each day) Extensive set
of features, versatility, attention to usability, etc.. Community is
friendly, smart and supportive

Themes should't be difficult at all to adapt to your needs, i redesign
my Drupal's weblog (http://simplelogica.net/logicola/) whenever i get
bored and the experience is good semantical,structural, standard fun.
:)    

For the stable release of Drupal, 4.3.1 ,any of these CSS, tableless
themes will give you a solid starting point
