Regarding your variable problem... double check your code again.  It sounds
like you have a typo.  I've seen instances where gremlin invisbile
characters get into source files and cause errors that are hard to detect.
Perhaps cut'n'paste through notepad or some other simple text editor and
resave (or recreate) the files in question.
