The reason there aren't simple tutorials is that it's a complex issue.
It's complex for the same reasons any of this is... browser
incompatibilities and bugs that have to be worked around.
There's no shame in using code that is offered freely. It's
intelligent use of your time and resources. On the other hand,
reverse-engineering that same free code is a very good way to practice
and learn coding techniques for yourself. (Assuming that what's you're
looking at is good code in the first place... learn from bad code and
you learn lousy techniques.)
If you find something that works well on the net, take it, use it,
change it as needed, and leave the author's copyright in place as
requested.
If you really want to "roll your own", learn CSS, learn javascript,
learn all the ins and outs of cross-browser and cross-platform issues,
and start from scratch. The alternative is to stand on the shoulders
of others who have gone before you. I would suggest the latter, though
you _still should_ learn CSS, javascript, etc. for yourself so that you
can go where others have not. ;)
So... there's no need to reinvent the wheel, but feel free to invent
something better. ;)
