Definitely FileZilla would be the best standalone then. It has all the
features of commercial products like CuteFTP, including easy-to-use CHMOD
(aka "File Attributes"). I actually dropped my commercial WS_FTP Pro (the
paid one!) and now use FileZilla as my main FTP.
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

Internet Explorer is a good makeshift FTP app, but it gets errors often
enough to cause dismay for beginners. A standalone app is usually easier
for non-geek clients' sense of context-switching.

Joan,

You didn't mention platform, but I'll hazard a guess at PC.

Try FileZilla:

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

It's wonderful.
