Maybe when you compiled PHP --withmysql mysql wasn't installed yet ?
I mean perhaps you installed mysql AFTER PHP, is that possible ?

I got apache up nice and running, installed php and mysql and everything
seemed to work fine. But.... when I first loaded a php page into my
browser, everything went wrong. I got the following error message:
"Fatal error: Call to undefined function:
mysql_connect() in /home/http/index.php on line 3". Does anybody have
any idea what is causing this? It is clear that php doesn't recognize
the mysql functions. But since all modules are working fine except for
this, I think php has problems accessing the mysql library. PHP was also
compiled with mysql. What am I doing wrong?
