not quite true.
you're not actually "distributing" the font, rather the bitstream
technology "locks" the pfr file to the url, meaning that the font can be
used on the site, but is not downloaded onto the client browser for use
elsewhere. there's also "character subsetting" where only the characters
used in the document are compiled into the pfr (giving both faster d/loads
for the font file and the additional safety that the font won't be reverse
engineered).
it does depend on the licence you hold for the font and it's worth checking
this, but afaik, you should be able to use most fonts you legitimately own.
