Cary,

That popup calendar looks great.

I also found fValidate which is a freeware script at 
http://www.peterbailey.net/fValidate/types/date/

This will handle dates typed straight into a text box without having to
separate out the year, month, and day.

This link has an isDate function

at the "FormChek.js" link.

There's no snazzy calendar box here, but that should be a quick Google away.
A search on "javascript calendar box" returned lots of alternatives.
Here's the first one I hit that looks like it fills your needs:
