If you want to be picky, XHTML 1.1 strongly suggests that it ought to be  
sent with MIME type application/xhtml+xml (or something like that) and not  
text/html.  However, that will keep anyone using a certain browser with  
large installed user base from viewing the site.

XHTML 1.0 Strict as text/html is (more) allowed, and you don't really gain  
anything from XHTML 1.1 IMO.
