[thelist] Is Target dead

I used to have a book about website usability ("Website Usability Guide")
that was from real case studies, but unfortunately I lent it out and...

I don't remember if it had anything about new windows, but I, for one, have
been annoyed more than once by my back button apparently being greyed out
when the site I was on opened up a new, full-screen window, for no good
reason that I could see.

(On the other hand, sometimes I've gone off at a tangent while browsing and
unable to find my way back to a site I wanted, I've been saved by a site
that had, all on its own, opened up a new window.)

Perhaps it would be fair to say that, if they are expected, fit the theme of
the site, and serve a useful purpose (eg click here to popup a calendar)
they are wonderful and useful. If, however, they are unexpected, and don't
fit with the theme of the site, they can be irriating and confusing.
