[thelist] Word for websites?

-------------------
Are later versions of Word acceptible for websites (I use 2000). If
not, why do
people use them for that? I assume lack of desire or information about
alternatives is part of it.
-------------------

Personally I reckon that earlier versions of Word are better. The code
got even more bloated and difficult to clean up in 2000 and made a
slight improvement with Office XP. Whenever I have to convert Word to
HTML I use Word 97, and then it is trivial to clean up the code.

Why is the code bloated - because M$ have this notion of round trip
HTML, i.e. that none of the Office software features will be lost on
conversion to HTML, so that if you then open the HTML file back up in
the Office software nothing will be lost. This is such a dumb idea, if
you want to share an office document without losing any of the features,
then just share the office document! Why bother converting to HTML at
all. An HTML conversion, all you want is the data to present on the web,
not the formulas or revision history.

Another reason why people use it - an Edit with Word icon may be added
to the right-click menu or to the Internet Explorer Toolbar, encouraging
its use.
