Boring they may be but it isn't their function to dazzle the user user 
with whistles and bells, their function is to help a user find the 
information they require quickly and easily. The majority of users will 
go to the site map when they are having trouble finding something, 
probably because the site doesn't conform to usability guidelines[0]. If 
they get there and find a page that does not look and function like all 
the site maps they have used before they are likely to just click out of 
the site, probably never ever to return...
