I should add that doing a whole bunch of steps manually introduces the
possiblity of operator error - a missed step, a misspelt registry key.

On the other hand, a well written installer can eliminate that problem
(especially if it also has a good installation log). Good documentation
helps with the edge cases when the install doesn't go properly, and the
admin can manually check each change that was supposed to occur to see
whether what should have happened actually did.
