Oh, yeah... damn...

Why not go server-side and check/replace double dashes with em-dashes in 
the case when the user-agent string is not Netscape 4, for instance?

(yeah, I know it's quite radical, but I don't see how you could do 
something that would be both largely supported and standard...)
