All: Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't these fixes be 
seen by Google and other search engines as "spam"?

Karl: I guess I'm still not clear on why you want to use this approach 
rather than just having the image in an <img> tag inside an <a> tag. I 
remember something about a search form "floating" on top of the logo, 
but if that's the case, couldn't you break the image up into two pieces 
to achieve the same effect?
