I think I'd call them community sites, and there're several that probably 
fit the bill:
- all those "dating/meetup" sites you mentioned
- evolt.org
- dpreview.com
- several other photography-related sites

I'm sure there are others, just those happen to be the ones my interests 
have exposed me to.
