Hi Mike,
I have a couple of clients setup with Hylafax[0] fax servers. They are
working very well using generic external modems based on the Intel
MD566x chipset. These modems cost under £20 (peanuts) here in the UK.
I use the 4.2.0 software release running on Debian with the modems in
software class 1 mode. The beauty of running the modems this way is that
Hylafax controls the entire fax process and it's fax code is far
superior to the fax firmware of even the most expensive modems or fax
boards.
As for clients ifax, who offer commercial Hylafax, support do a tightly
integrated windows client HylaFSP that integrates with windows fax and
presents as a fax printer. Or there are numerous free clients that will
present a print device and popup dialogue for the fax number. The
Hylafax wiki [1] has an excellent list of all the available clients.
