Regarding the logo design question, there is a great deal in between
the $25 clipart logo and the $50,000 mega corporation logo. As a
designer who works in the middle, this is a very important issue to me,
so I'm throwing in my two cents. If you really want to serve your
clients well, you should investigate some of the alternatives. There
are a million independent designers out there, many of whom would be
happy to work up some professional logo options for not a lot of money.
My going rate is $75 and hour, and depending on the client, the
complexity of the logo required, and whether they are a
business-to-business or a retail/consumer company, a decent logo can
take anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks. While there are many
clients who will never realize the benefits of professional brand
development, I think yanking a logo off of a clipart CD and slapping it
on the page is really a 2nd rate solution. In my opinion, you should at
least provide them with the option of having a professional logo
designed. If they are unwilling or unable to spend the money, then
ultimately that's their problem. But if you're going to work as a
designer, as well as a programmer, then I think you have an obligation
to educate your clients on all of their options, and to do some basic
research on brand development. To not do so really give the rest of us
a bad name.

Regard,
Scott Benton
