[thelist] www prefix is it necessary?

Not exactly. I have found that many site simply do not work unless you 
use the www. subdomain. Has something to do with the host records in 
the domain name server. I make sure that all of the sites that I 
develop work with and without the www prefix. It sometimes entails 
opening a support ticket with a clients hosting provider.
