Well, I ended up going back to the client and asking for a different 
format.  2 days of work for nothing.  "Oh Sure, we can do that.  Hang on 
1 sec"  and there it was, on my ftp, in a nice easy to import format.

So, Moral of the story-
avoiding trying to look dumb by doing everything the hard way and 
failing in the long run can sometimes be avoided by just asking the 
client for a better data export :D

Anyway, thanks for the help on this topic... I did learn a few things in 
the process, even though it was unsuccessful.  Learning is fun :)
