You may be able to make better use of your time by contributing to an 
existing project.  Freshmeat [1] and Sourceforge [2] are good places to 
find out about the open source projects that are out there.

"Graphics program" is pretty broad.  If you can be more specific about 
what you have in mind,  people can give you more meaningful advice.  If 
you mean a graphics editing program, you may want to check out the GIMP 
[3] and Sodipodi [4].  Those might be good projects for you to 
contribute to.
