After reading "Don't make me think!", by Steve Krug, we enbarked on doing
some inhouse user testing (we're a charity and can't spend money on
getting someone else to do it). It was extremely instructive and humbling.
If you can't do anymore than sit with a friend, who has not had anything
to do with the site your designing, while they try to accomplish a few
tasks, this is well worth doing, I don't completely agree with Krug's take
on navigational tabs, but the process he lays out for usability tests
shows you how effective your site design is in getting people to the
places they want to go. People are not stupid, they just don't want to
spend time figuring out how Web sites work.
>If anyones thinking about getting a user test for their site - do it!
>Ive just taken a round of tests and most of what Krug says is
>absolutely spot on. It really is surprising how effective they are for
>evaluating the effectiveness of a site, and in terms of value for money
>its almost as good value as a winning lottery ticket.
