Probably much more than you need, but I've used this before:
http://java.sun.com/products/jtapi/

Don't know about a method using PHP, and neither does Google.

Here's example code showing how easy the task is to do with tapi (the
api jtapi is modeled after):

I think you're stuck with using Java for this.
