Bruce,

This may be a bit overkill for what you're needing, but I run Drupal[0] for
just about everything requiring a user login and separate admin section.
It's fairly simple to setup and has worked quite well for me. The last few
versions of it have made it simpler to run multiple sites off a single
codebase and database.
