For example by not filling in To; or Cc: fields of the mail the compose 
in their email program, only using Bcc:

I've been doing this kind of mailers with PHP, very simple, and the 
biggest lists have been around 10000 subscribers - which is already a 
bit much, but still managable.

If the band is expecting a lot more traffic, it might be a good idea to 
invest a bit more than £30/year to the hosting... For £30/month they'll 
get a service where there will be no problems sending large amount of 
mail or having large amount of visitors. That investment would be 
covered by the sale of just a couple CD's more.
