I have been working on a similar problem also and it seems that Apple iTunes
requires a .m3u or .pls extension on the URL - it doesn't care about mime
type.

With Cold Fusion running on Apache/Linux (I don't know about other servers)
you can send the playlist file as:  file.cfm/play.m3u  or file.cfm/play.pls
and iTunes will play the URL.  This is adapted from a trick to add variables
without using ? and = in the URL address.
