[thelist] asp.net: Reresh a page and keep viewstate

I'm struggling with the concept of refreshing a page and maintaining
form data in viewstate.  I've tried a few methods w/o luck.  The idea is
that from time to time the server may need to communicate with the
user... example: "You have 2 new requests" could change to "You have 3
new requests".

It's not possible to push data to the user.  So, how would you cause the
page to re-fresh while not loosing data in viewstate?
