When and if you employ any XHTML features unavailable in HTML is soon
enough to use it. Compatibility is a non-issue when you employ none of
its exclusive features.

M$ has announced that IE7 will not be supported in versions of doze
older than XP SP2. It will be many years before the number of
W98/W2K/XPSP0-SP1 IE6 users shrinks enough to ignore like we do with N4
users now. That means browsers will continue to provide HTML 4 support
for the rest of our lifetimes at least.
