I spent money (and more than with the exploding Dells) on a IBM
thinkpad T40, and have yet to regret it. They are not pretty, they are
not snazzy, but WORK WORK WORK. I emptied a whole Massimo Mocchachino
with Soy Milk in one and after drying it out it still worked.

So if you need a laptop that you can work with but also can stand a
bang, get a Thinkpad.
