In Windows to be sure, go into

Start --> Settings -->  Control Panel

Open up "Folder Options" and select the "View" tab

Scroll down to "Hide extensions for known file types" and make sure it 
is NOT checked.  If checked it will hide the file extension,  .php, 
.html, .txt, .jpg, .whatever, further confusing the situation.  Perhaps 
you just need the file with a .txt extension?

You can also visit the File Types tab and make other adjustments for 
which program to open files by default.
